EVERYBODY STARTS SOMEWHERE

Jiu-Jitsu and grappling in general is a very rewarding endeavor.

It can get you in great shape, it can help to build your confidence, and resilience, can connect you with a group of like-minded, goal-oriented people, and enhance your life

But we won’t sugarcoat things

It isn’t easy and can be very physically and mentally challenging as well. Let's talk about some strategies that you can use to start overcoming any feelings of frustration, intimidation, or overwhelm that you might feel as you start your journey as a grappler.

  • Understand it all part of the process- It's completely normal to feel frustrated, intimidated, and overwhelmed when you first start training Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Even if you were a wrestler with years of mat, experience there are still mistakes you will make and things that you need to get used to, like getting choked when shooting a double leg or fighting off of your back. Jiu-jitsu has a learning curve and you’re jumping into an environment where people have more experience than you (even if by just a few days). Don’t get discouraged these are common beginner feelings, but with the right mindset and support, you can overcome the challenges.
  • Small wins= Big Results- you’re not going to be good at everything at first so avoid focusing on everything that might have gone wrong and instead focus on the small wins you achieved throughout practice.. Escaped being pinned? Awesome! Didn't feel as gassed during rounds? Great!  Maintained position for a longer time than last practice? That's going to pay off! All of these little things will start to compound and pay off over time. Remember, slow progress is still progress.
  • Communicate with your coach- whether you’re feeling overwhelmed. frustrated, intimidated, or anything communicate it to your coach! They have been training a long time, they have been where you are and have felt what you’re feeling. They can help you get through this, but if you never tell them, they won't know
  • Turn frustration into fascination- As we mentioned, its totally normal to feel a bit frustrated, but wallowing in that frustration will do you no good, if a particular move or position is giving you trouble, turn your frustration into fascination, do some research about that move/position. Ask questions, learn as much as you can until you’ve conquered your frustration, and move on to the next thing

While jiu-jitsu is challenging, its complexity is also what makes it so rewarding. With consistent, patient training, the pieces will start coming together. You'll gain competency and confidence. In time, you may even become someone who helps newcomers handle those same intimidating beginnings. Trust the process and embrace the jiu-jitsu journey.
