Dealing with frustration, intimidation, and feeling overwhelmed as a jiu-jitsu beginner:

Everybody Starts Somewhere

Jiu-jitsu, and grappling in general, is a very rewarding endeavor.

It can get you in great shape.
It can help build your confidence and resilience.
It can connect you with a group of like-minded, goal-oriented people.
It can enhance your life.

But we won’t sugarcoat things —
It isn’t easy, and it can be very physically and mentally challenging.

Let's talk about some strategies you can use to overcome any feelings of frustration, intimidation, or overwhelm as you start your journey as a grappler.

Understand It's All Part of the Process

It's completely normal to feel frustrated, intimidated, and overwhelmed when you first start training Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Even if you were a wrestler with years of mat experience, there are still mistakes you’ll make and things you’ll need to get used to — like getting choked when shooting a double leg or fighting off of your back.

Jiu-jitsu has a learning curve, and you’re jumping into an environment where people may have more experience than you (even if by just a few days).

Don’t get discouraged — these are common beginner feelings.
With the right mindset and support, you can overcome the challenges.

Small Wins = Big Results

You’re not going to be good at everything at first, so avoid focusing on everything that might have gone wrong.

Instead, focus on the small wins you achieved throughout practice:

  • Escaped being pinned? Awesome!
  • Didn’t feel as gassed during rounds? Great!
  • Maintained position longer than last time? That’s progress!

All of these little things will start to compound and pay off over time.
Remember: slow progress is still progress.

Communicate With Your Coach

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or intimidated — communicate it to your coach.

They’ve been training a long time. They’ve been where you are.
They’ve felt what you’re feeling.

They can help you get through it.
But if you don’t tell them, they won’t know.

Turn Frustration Into Fascination

Frustration is totally normal.
But wallowing in it won’t help.

If a particular move or position is giving you trouble, turn that frustration into fascination:

  • Do some research on that move or position
  • Ask questions
  • Study and drill until you’ve conquered it
  • Then move on to the next challenge

While jiu-jitsu is challenging, its complexity is also what makes it so rewarding.

With consistent, patient training, the pieces will start coming together.
You’ll gain competency and confidence.
In time, you may even become someone who helps newcomers handle those same intimidating beginnings.

Trust the process. Embrace the jiu-jitsu journey.
