Take a quick spin around our website and you’ll see posts talking about things like winning, aiming for excellence, working to be the best at what you do, not simply settling for being kinda OK at something etc these are things we believe in and we believe in wholeheartedly and yet, a common phrase you’ll hear our coaches use when someone might be struggling or overly critical of themselves is:
“Guys, its OK.. its just jiu-jitsu” or “its just wrestling”
Now, please don’t take our use of the word “just” to mean that we don’t care or trivialize somebody's struggles, NOTHING could be further from the truth.
But it's important to keep things in perspective.
We absolutely want grappling to be a big part of our athlete’s lives, we want them to have an intense desire to improve, we always want them aiming to win, and we want them to see being an athlete at No Limits as a super important thing that they do…
Just not everything They ARE.
Getting bit by the grappling bug can be one of the greatest things to ever happen to a person, you can develop physically, mentally, emotionally, and take the lessons you learn on the mat and bleed it over to every other avenue of their life
BUT
The danger becomes when you care so much about something that you start to make it your identity and internalize your performance.
A big reason that our Head Coach, Matt Marcinek, started to study psychology is that when he went through his lengthy losing streak, grappling was such a big part of his identity that the thoughts started to creep in
“If this is my life and i’m not good at it, then i must suck at other things in my life as well”
Obviously, this is a harmful way of thinking and took a lot of study, research, and work to get over it was coming to the realization that although grappling might have been a huge part of his life, it wasnt the ONLY part of his life and that his performance on the mat, didnt make the other areas of his life any better or any worse.
So instead of having our athlete’s endure the same type of struggle and need to go through the same type of work, we try to keep things in perspective right from the start.
If you train at No Limits, you’re going to have a lot of great days on the mats, but when you don’t just remember theres always tomorrow and ..
Its just jiu-jitsu
