Looking For Stress Relief in Scranton? Try Jiu-jitsu

December 2, 2023

Life today is increasingly high-stress. Whether it’s work deadlines, financial worries, or 24/7 digital connectivity, anxiety and tension seem unavoidable. However, research shows that consistent exercise is one of the best ways to combat stress. And for truly effective stress relief, look no further than jiu-jitsu.

A 2010 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that a regular Brazilian jiu-jitsu training regimen significantly reduced stress indicators in adult participants. After three months of training multiple times per week, subjects reported better sleep quality, increased feelings of vigor and decreased fatigue. These are key signs that the body and mind are effectively managing stressors.

In addition, a 2015 study published in Physiology & Behavior demonstrated cortisol levels prior to training were higher on days when subjects anticipated a jiu-jitsu session versus rest days. This suggests rolling provides an impactful physical outlet for daily accumulated stress.

Combining intense full-body exercise with complex problem-solving makes jiu-jitsu uniquely beneficial for relieving stress. It thoroughly distracts the mind from everyday worries as you strategize combinations and react to your rolling partner. The constant flow drills and sparring integrate cardiovascular, muscular and mental exertion. Proper technique requires precise coordination only possible when you are calm and focused. The deep breathing control needed to pace yourself during rounds also helps participants relax.

At No Limits, we pride ourselves on giving our athletes an environment that helps to “shut the outside world off” for an hour or two a day and also provide an avenue for them to set goals and feel a sense of accomplishment, motivation, and purpose through  competition or just regular rolling (sparring)
